Engine Woes at Lowe’s!

Lowe’s Motor Speedway – Concord, NC – May 27, 2004

The night ended early for Brad Smith Motorsports Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, as the engine gave out halfway through the Quaker Steak and Lube 100.

The No. 26 Ford Taurus was running only one lap down when Brad started reporting trouble with the engine on lap 35. “I think the motor is starting to miss,” he radioed in to his team, chiefed this week by Phil Silardi. A lap later he confirmed it, saying “something’s going away.”

Spotter Mark Vandenboom reported that there was no smoke, but that the engine was definitely off-song as Brad passed the spotter stand, and Silardi thought it sounded like it was running on seven cylinders. During the fourth caution period the car was losing oil pressure and Brad started noticing smoke in the cockpit. He came into the pits and after a look under the hood, the team decided to take the car to the garage and settle for a 35th place finish.

Next up for Brad and the No. 26 team is the Kansas Lottery $200 on Saturday, June 5.
