Brad Smith Motorsports Finishes the Season with a Team Effort
South Boston Speedway – South Boston, VA – October 18, 2003
For Saturday’s final race of the 2003 ARCA/REMAX season, Brad Smith’s brother Jeff jumped down off the pit box to take a turn behind the wheel. Still suffering the after-effects of a qualifying fire two races ago at Talladega, Brad ran the first three laps at South Boston Speedway before handing the wheel to Jeff.
The team finished 80 of 200 scheduled laps before a spin-out resulted in an oil leak, retiring the car from the race in 32nd. Winston Cup star Ken Schrader won the ARCA Liberty 200 from the pole and Frank Kimmel, already crowned as 2003 ARCA/REMAX champion, came in second. Hermie Sadler, Jason Jarrett, and L.W. Miller rounded out the top five at the .4-mile oval.
The last three races of the season have been a mixed bag for BSMS.
With Brad injured at Talladega and no back-up car at the track, Paul Menard wound up using the 26’s provisional and won the race.
Then, after traveling to Charlotte, the team withdrew their entry from that event.
Finishing the season with a car on the track was probably just what the doctor ordered as Brad and the team enter the off-season and start preparing for 2004.
The race will be broadcast on the Outdoor Channel on November 1 at 11:00 pm Eastern.
